Chew Volume 1: Taster's Choice (Review)

Chew, Volume 1: Taster's Choice (Chew, #1-5)

By: John Layman & Rob Guillory (Illustrator)
Publisher: Image Comics
Release Date: December 8th, 2009
Genres: Mature Mystery Fiction

My Review: (5/5 stars*)

Chew, Volume 1 gives you a taste of exciting proportions. Here's a comic that serves up a diversity of flavors. Layman takes criminal solving in a new direction with the main protagonist's special talent for solving cases and catching the bad guys. Matching an equally unique story Guillory's presentation of illustrations is a feast for the eyes. Brought together is a savory story and artwork that pairs well together.

Image Comics publishes yet another winner with Chew. Chew is a graphic novel that takes cannibalism and investigating down an unusual path. Set in a world where the bird flu is prevalent and has killed 23 million people, the F.D.A. is the highest form of law enforcement and Tony Chu is the detective following up.

Detective Tony Chu has an advantage most investigators would simultaneously crave and be repulsed by. He can ascertain information through ingesting foods or other edible materials. In his line of work that means sometimes—or more often than not—taking a bite out of a corpse to find out the details of their murder to crack cases. They call what he can do Cibopathic: the ability to get physic impressions from whatever he consumes. As a new addition to the Special Crimes Division—the most powerful enforcement agency there is—he investigates even the most dead-end of mysteries.

I could barely stomach my enjoyment of this series, it's just that damn good! Although, it's probably NOT a good idea to eat food while reading because it holds back nothing when it comes to describing its contents—literally. You can expect a considerable amount of violence, action, mystery, with a splash of horror decorating each page with graphic imagery of all of the above. Cleverly concise dialogue, and truly out there characters lends itself to a ridiculously intriguing, and strangely addicting story not to be missed out on. No need to Chew it over just pick up these comics and enjoy!

Synopsis:

Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he's a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn't mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He's been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest, and most bizarre cases.
